FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – The Broward League of Cities installed Davie Council member Susan Starkey as its new president during a ceremony May 4. Shining a light on the vital role small businesses play in the economic well-being of municipalities, Starkey announced that “Small Businesses, Big Plans” will be the signature initiative of her one-year presidential term.

“Small businesses truly are the core of our community,” Starkey said. “As the new president of the Broward League of Cities, I am honored that I will be able to help lead Broward County’s cities, towns and villages in partnering with entrepreneurs and business owners to help boost our local economy.”

The Broward League of Cities is a non-partisan, non-profit organization representing the 31 municipal governments and more than 80 associate government, non-profit and business organizations within Broward County. Chartered in 1957, the organization is dedicated to increasing awareness and providing resolutions to is-sues that affect day-to-day operations at the county, state, and federal levels.

Starkey succeeds Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Bobby DuBose as League president. DuBose, who selected “Together We Serve” as the theme of his presidency, was honored at the installation dinner with a tribute to his successful Million Hour Volunteer Challenge, which tallied more than three million service hours throughout Broward County.

“The success of the Million Hour Challenge speaks to who we are as a League, as a county, and as a community,” Dubose said. “When we volunteer, we serve, and when we serve, we are at our best.”

After his tribute, DuBose presented the League’s 2013 President’ Award to Broward League of Cities Deputy Executive Director Sely Cochrane and City of Fort Lauderdale District III Aide Tracy Roach, saying, “Sely and Tracy were instrumental partners throughout my role as president of the League. Their exceptional talent and hard work over the past year has helped the entire organization operate smoothly.”
