Can President Obama improve income inequality in America?

By Roger Caldwell

Since 2008, 95 percent of the income gains have gone to the top 1 percent of the population. This 1 percent of the population is controlled by 400 families in the country, and political decisions are determined by people who are wealthy. It does not matter the color of your skin. Either you are part of the 1 percent or you are not.

When Walmart the largest employer of the country pays its workers $9.00 an hour, there is something fundamentally wrong with the system because their workers cannot pay their bills and eat. The family that owns Walmart are billionaires, but they refuse to pay their workers a living minimum wage. The gap between all the classes and the super-rich continues to grow, and families are making less than they made in the 90’s.

In President Obama’s last inaugural address, he stated, “America could not succeed when a shrinking few do very well and a growing many barely make it.” The president understands the problems but in his position, he needs support from the people. The president is claiming that the Republicans are trying to “extort him” but where is his help?

People in America do not understand that Income Inequality is true for all Americans. People would like to think that there is a difference in the middle class and the poor class, but al-most everyone is three paychecks away from being broke. America as a country is bankrupted and the majority of its citizens are over-extended.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) will benefit all Americans, but the Republicans would prefer to hold the government hostage

and defund the bill. It is amazing that so many citizens are misguided because the bill can help all Americans.

At this point in America 50 percent of the income is controlled by 400 families, and they refuse to have their tax-es increased. Somewhere in our country, the Republicans have forgotten to put the people first. When Americans with a college education cannot find a good job, the economy is not working; the laws need to be changed.

“Unfortunately right now, the debate going on in Congress is not meeting the test of helping middle class families. They are not focused on you. They’re focused on politics. They’re fo-cused on trying to mess with me. They’re not focused on you,” says President O-bama.

The president is correct when he blames the Republicans for the foolish that goes on in Congress, but there are still times when the Democrats get caught up in crony capitalism. Many economists believe that the Obama ad-ministration mismanaged TARP money by bailing out banks, and using stimulus money to help companies owned by financial contributors to Obama and Democrat candidates.

In 2012, there was more money spent by both parties during the presidential campaign in the history of America. Everyone in office makes decisions based on powerful lobbyist who are controlled by wealthy donors.

Out of one side of his mouth, President Obama talks about giving the middle class a bigger share of the economic pie. But in reality income inequality for all Americans has gotten worst in 2013. The stock market is above 15,000 points, but there are more poor people in the country than ever before.

The rich continue to get richer and the rest of the country continues to get poorer. There are 400 families who control half of all the wealth in the country and there is no reason they cannot afford to be taxed more and give more back to the vast majority of ordinary working people.

America has the potential to become a great country, when its people stop fighting each other. There is no reason that incomes have not increased and there are more poor people in the wealthiest country in the world. When everyone in the country is working and making money, the economy is growing and everyone succeeds.
