37TH Annual Dr. Nan S. Hutchison Broward Senior Hall of Fame Olean Pridgen of Margate, age 84

Olean Pridgen has served as a Foster Grandparent volunteer for nearly five years and has provided the community with over 5,000 hours of services. Olean is fondly  referred to as “Grandma O” and dedicates much of her time at Margate Elementary, where she provides tutoring and mentoring to students four days a week, five hours each day.   Celebrating 45 Years of Sisterhood are the ladies of Phase II who pledged Kappa Epsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on the campus of The Florida State University on June 6, 1976.  Following graduation, these 18 young ladies went on to have stellar careers in the fields of public administration, law, business, education, and law enforcement.  As pacesetters, they accomplished a lot of firsts in their professions, achieved success in both the private and public sectors, and consistently worked to enhance their communities through service and philanthropy.   […]

     The LGBT community has experienced some major difficulties in 2020 and 2021. Whether it was the unjust laws against the community, or the deaths of trans men and women, it’s been rather tumultuous.      No one in Florida really knows who to trust and believe when it comes to information about the vaccine numbers. Based on the census in 2020, the total statewide population is 21,477,737. According to the census as of April 28, 2021, 36% of Florida’s White population has been vaccinated; 24.4% of Florida’s Hispanic population has been vaccinated, and 17.3% of Florida’s Black population has been vaccinated. The total people vaccinated statewide, as of April 28, 2021, is 8,684,024. […]

In recognition of Juneteenth, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale will present “Looking Forward, Looking Back: Freedom, Afrofuturism and Reflections on Juneteenth,” a free virtual panel discussion on Saturday, June 19 at 3 p.m. This event launches Community Voices, NSU Art Museum’s new initiative supported by the Community Foundation of Broward, that focuses on exploring social and racial inequalities and challenging social structures, including representation in museums. Community Voices will provide a new forum for community discourse as it highlights topics of identity, migration and race through talks, multidisciplinary performances and workshops that are aimed at celebrating diversity and that serve as a catalyst for social change.   […]
