THE FIGHT FOR THE SOUL OF AMERICA: ‘22 MID-TERMS UNDOUTEDLY THE MOST IMPORTANT ELECTION IN OUR LIFETIME

This space is normally reserved for our Student/Athlete of the Week selection, but as in life, things don’t always materialize or happen as planned. So, as a somewhat social activist, I will use this opportunity to hopefully ignite a voting frenzy catapulting Charlie Chris, Val Demmings  Sheila Sherfilus McCormick et al to  victory in November. I don’t know what is occurring nationally, but here in Broward, mid-term elections on a scale of one to one hundred, appear to fall somewhere in the 20% range, closely resembling the pathetic, lukewarm voter enthusiasm of the  2022 primaries. Robinson made the choice he had to make with Sykes

While not getting involved emotionally to the FAMU search for a new athletic director, I watched from the sideline.  I was not a member of the committee, not a decision-maker, so trying to interject into the process was fruitless.  For the most part, it was better for me as I knew several of the candidates and it was better for me to wait for an outcome. Plantation Colonel Jamari Haynes, Westside Gazette’s Student/Athlete of the Week

The effusive, infectious persona of Jamari Haynes was readily apparent after speaking with Plantation Colonel head coach Steve Davis and reading about him and his family. He personifies every quality that we admire in a student/athlete both  academically and athletically. And it took Coach Davis every bit of 5 seconds to nominate Jamari once he was broached about recommending one of his athletes for the Westside Gazette’s weekly feature.  […]

NFL’S CONCUSSION PROTOCOL MODIFIED AFTER TAGOVAILOA REVIEW

The league and players’ union said in a joint statement Saturday that while the Dolphins followed protocol after the injury, the outcome of the Tagovailoa case “was not what was intended when the Protocol was drafted.” As a result, language addressing abnormality of balance/stability was added to the league’s protocol list of symptoms that would keep a player from returning to the game. Dillard Panther Josh Bowen, Westside Gazette’s Student/Athlete of the Week

Josh Bowen is a physically imposing 6’3” 215 pound specimen who just happens to play outside linebacker, a position made famous by Lawrence Taylor of the Super Bowl champions New York Football Giants, for the famed Dillard High Panthers. It is a position that requires strength, speed, agility, quickness, making one equally adept at rushing the passer or dropping in pass coverage. Micah Parsons of the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay’s Devin White personify those characteristics today. Combining his physical attributes with his intellectual maturation and knowledge of the game has positioned him for scholarship offers from Akron University in Ohio and Syracuse University and as the season progresses assuredly more offers will surface. […]

Sincere “Han Boy” Rodriguez, WG’s Student/Athlete of the Week

One glance at the photo above evokes an image of a compact, powerful and aggressive bowling ball of a runner who, at 5’ 11”, 205 pounds, doesn’t shy away from contact. According to his head coach, Travis Harden of the Stranahan Dragons, that is an apt description of Sincere “Han Boy“ Rodriguez, who two weeks ago ran for 110 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns on 15 carries in a difficult, hard fought loss to  the Plantation Colonels.
