CORPORAL ERNEST SNEED, 92, RECEIVES THE CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL —from President Barrack Obama and the Congress of the United States on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012 at Jefferson County Middle/High School. Marine Lieutenant General Lawrence F. Snowden gave the keynote address as well as presented Sneed with the medal. Sneed is one of the remaining 500 Marines who trained at Camp Montford Point in New River, N.C., was in the 52nd defense battalion during World War II and was one of thousands of Black men to train at the camp 1942 through 1946. World War II Montford Point Marine Marine Lieutenant General Lawrence F. Snowden gave the keynote address as well as presented Sneed with the meda. Corporal Sneed was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by President Obama and the Congress of the United States in 2012. He is a member of Jefferson County VFW Post 251 and recently celebrated his 96th birthday on June 18, 2016. He is the last and oldest living World War II Marine, Black or white, residing in Jefferson County, Monticello, Fla. Submitted by John Nelson Sr.
