Although Darrien Sworn may not be old chronologically, he displayed an ability to express himself in written form which was reflective of someone far beyond his years. The sixth grader from Pompano Beach chose to honor Pastor Eddy Moise, Jr. of the Bethel AME. Church who he felt was a living example and one who personified many of the qualities that Dr. King exhibited throughout his life.

Westside Gazette Newspaper salutes our MLK Essay Award recipient for 2014 Darrien Sworn.

At the thought of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. my pastor Reverend Eddy Moise Jr. comes to my mind. Our history speaks highly about Dr. King being a positive past legend a mover & shaker with a dream. Reverend Eddy Moise, Jr. the senior pastor at Bethel AME Church located in Pompano Beach, Florida is a loyal and hardworking man of God;  as a pastor and a spiritual leader in the community. He’s a pastor that’s always available to listen and pray with everyone. Reverend Moise is always on the move leading by example within his church and the community. Therefore, I highly recommend that he be given the 2014 Westside Gazette MLK Award.

Pastor Moise is a young pastor with a family; however, he’s never to busy. He always reaching outside of the church and connecting with the community. He has a great interest and love for the youth. He partners with Sanders Park Elementary School wherein he and his congregation serve breakfast and lunch annually to the teachers and staff as an appreciation for their support to our children’s education. He also recognized the honor roll students from Sanders Park with an award. The partnership has also helped the school by providing assistance and resources.

Every Wednesday, his church feeds 100 + homeless families and pastor stops in to minister & pray with the people. Also on the 2nd Saturday of each month, Pastor Moise started a street ministry. He along with some of the members walks the community; he goes under the trees, in the parks and in front of the corner stores sharing Gods Word and inviting them to come by the church. I have seen a few of them come to church because Rev. Moise invited them. My pastor even visits the nursing facilities. He often visits Willow Woods where my grandfather is a resident. I remember him and the men ministry of his church fellowshipped & served com-munion with the patients and their families. The people love him and ask about for him to come all the time.

Pastor Moise is a smart young man. He graduated from Florida State University and is currently studying for his PhD in ministry.  He’s a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

My name is Darrien Sworn; I am an 11-year-old sixth- grader that attends Bethel AME Church located in Pompano Beach. I truly admire my pastor because he is a cool man of God. He is an Image of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I hope the selection committee picks my pastor for the MLK Award.
