Inmate who impregnated four prison guards is the tip of the corruption iceberg for Baltimore jail

By Black Like Moi

You don’t expect men to go to prison and get any of the guards pregnant.  But when you hear about an inmate getting four guards pregnant, you know that there is really something wrong.

A few months ago, you read about the case of Tavon White, the man who apparently controlled the Baltimore Detention Center.  White was part of a larger connection between the Black Guerrilla Family and the correctional system, where there was a vast network of contraband smuggling, sex, and lots of other things that you don’t expect to see happening behind bars.

According to the Baltimore Sun, a series of wiretaps and witnesses have revealed that nearly two-thirds of the 650 officers working at the jail were involved in the smuggling of contraband.  In fact, many of these workers are alleged to be gang affiliated themselves.  As a result of the overly corrupt system, the state’s governor, Martin O’Malley, has been criticized heavily for not doing what he could to ensure that these problems did not exist.

Now, a total of 25 defendants are being brought to trial on charges, with 13 of those being corrections officers. A total of 16 of them have pleaded guilty to racketeering. A total of eight officers have left the department and six of them have been suspended. One of the officers, Milshenna People, was caught on camera being touched by an inmate inappropriately, and another was seen singing a song that showed allegiance to the gang running the jail.

“Court documents allege the BGF members recruited correctional officers through personal and often sexual relationships, as well as bribes, and that some officers traded sex for money,” the U.S. Attorney’s office said in a statement.
