MIAMI, FL — OIC of South Florida and its teen pregnancy prevention initiative are proud to announce the “Use Your Mind, Not Your Body,” Teen Pregnancy Prevention Conference, Saturday Aug. 24, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Signature Grand in Davie, Fla. Attendance is free. Pastor Paula White will discuss issues such as Developing Positive Self Images, Media & The Adolescent Mind, Strategies for Heal-thy Relationships and Family Strengthening. Florida’s rates of adolescent sexual activity are higher than comparable national rates for high school students and Florida ranks first for rates of new HIV cases among 13 – 19 year-old adolescents – the conference’s aim is to offer solutions and preventative measures.

“This conference and our ongoing campaigns all support our chief agenda which is maximizing youth opportunities for success. The conference helps us gather South Florida youth, parents and community stakeholders and teachers in one place which allows us to discuss the topics together, from pupil to professor to parent. The importance of this event is to connect, equip and empower youth to take ownership for their decisions and for parents and community stakeholders to understand their role in developing today’s youth,” said Arlene Connelly, Division Director Youth & Family Services, OIC of South Florida.  Programming for the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Conference will include The Adolescent Brain, 7 Principles of Healthy Relationships, Cyber Safety, Condom Skills Integration and Disadvantage is Not Destiny to name a few.

OIC of South Florida’s youth and family services include a five-year Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative  through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a five-year 21st Century Community Learning Centers academic and personal enrichment grant through the Florida Department of Education, and several youth career development programs supported through WorkForce One, the local work-force board, the Children’s Services Council and other stakeholders throughout the south Florida community.

OIC of South Florida is also launching a new marketing and outreach campaign targeted directly to youth. Decisions R4 Ever and its social media hash-tag #DR4E are designed to illustrate how decisions can shape your future.  “We need our kids to understand the importance and impact of decisions. Good decisions or bad, the decisions our youth make last forever. The good news is that a string of positive decisions can turnaround poor decisions, it works both ways and the DR4E campaign will seek to show them how to get back on track by doing the right thing,” Connelly added.

The Teen Pregnancy Prevention Conference expects an attendance of 350 and includes lunch with community stakeholders and a guest speaker.  Registration is free and must be completed by August 15, 2013. Visit: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/7448411399 to register.
