Desiline Victor What’s the Big Deal?”: Fox News hosts mock 102 year old woman who waited in line hours to vote

Desiline Victor

Desiline Victor, a 102-year-old Haitian immigrant, waited in line for hours to vote. On her first visit to her polling place on Oct 28, she waited in line for three hours before being told to come back later. She finally cast her vote later that evening when she returned.

On Tuesday (Feb. 12, 2013) night, Victor was at President Obama’s State of the Union, being held up by President Obama as a living example of everything that’s wrong with America’s election system.

On Fox News Radio’s Kilmeade & Friends, however, Desiline Victor was the b**t of jokes. Host Brian Kilmeade, Fox’s Martha MacCallum and Bill Hemmer laughed off all the trouble that the 102-year-old Desiline Victor went through to cast her ballot for President Obama.

While discussing Victor, MacCallum wondered aloud, “What’s the big deal?” and continued, “This is such a non-issue. Ridiculous.” Hemmer added that at the State of the Union, Obama “held her up as a victim. What was she a victim of? Rashes on the bottom of her feet?” (Actually, Obama held her up as a victor, a person who endured great challenges in order to meet a specific goal.)

Fox News commentators also seemed to agree that Victor having waited in line so long was the result of rude voters who hadn’t allowed Desiline to break the line and inept poll workers. So in so far as they’re concerned, this was just a problem of people not being nice enough, but the system is just fine.

Truth is, the world would be a wonderful place if all people were nice, and if there were no governors like Rick Scott who sought to disenfranchise voters, but that’s not the world we live in, and that’s why we have laws.
