We were taught the Greeks led our globe in mathematical tasks. The accurate history is that all of the equations and algorithms for basic math operations were invented in Ishango, Africa. Another myth is that the Great Wall of China was the largest earthworks ever built by man. Guinness Book of World Records annotated, “the Walls of Benin were the world’s largest earthworks carried out prior to the mechanical era.”

As we remember the 61st anniversary of the iconic I Have a Dream speech, I am grateful for the powerful legacy left by my uncle, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. If he were here with us today, he would undoubtedly remind us that we are one blood, one human race. He would call upon us to learn to live together as brothers and sisters, rather than perish together as fools. His message of unity, justice, and love is as relevant now as it was when he stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963.

Sitting in a wheelchair, Jackson soaked in the celebration Sunday night from the front of the auditorium where he had so many times urged on his followers. For more than three hours, he received a constant stream of admirers who said they had been trained and inspired by him over the decades. All the while, prominent Democrats spoke from the stage.

“Black people — especially young Black people — can make a HUGE difference in swaying election outcomes,” says Diane Robinson, educator and founder of Yard Girl Productions, which makes films about education and social change. One need look no further, she says, than to the last presidential and midterm elections: “In 2020 and 2022, Black people and young people were key to the outcomes of those elections.”
