The Orange Blossom Classic traditionally featured the FAMU Rattlers versus a worthy opponent as was the case for previous 2 years (Jackson State University vs. FAMU) since its resurrection. The Denny’s Orange Blossom Classic committee chose defending MEAC Champion North Carolina Central University to compete against the Alabama State University Hornets who are predicted to win the SWAC championship. The game, scheduled to start at 1:00 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Garden, didn’t actually begin until around 3:00 pm due to inclement weather, an element that would become a recurring theme.

Jim Crow chicanery led to a secret agreement to not sign any more Black players. That void was filled with the nascent Negro League. The Negro League Baseball Museum cited, “Black players formed their own units, ‘barnstorming’ around the country to play anyone who would challenge them.” The movie Bingo Long and the Traveling All Stars was based on those teams. In 1920, an organized league was formed under the helm of Andrew “Rube” Foster—a former player, manager, and owner for the Chicago American Giants.” Rube was a passionate visionary. After the first World War he took advantage of the “Great Migration” to unite an all-Black group of owners to create the Negro National Leaguge. The league had eight teams: The Chicago American Giants, the Chicago Giants, the Cuban Stars (New York), the Dayton Marcos, the Detroit Stars, the Indianapolis ABC’s, the Kansas City Monarchs, and the St. Louis Giants.
Instead, the Rattlers erased an 18-7 fourth-quarter deficit to outlast the Bulldogs 22-18 and extend the nation’s second-longest home winning streak to 21 wins.

For many, what makes this even more troubling is the continued support Trump receives from some Black celebrities and self-proclaimed Black conservatives, who either align with him or spread misinformation about his opponents. Actor and R&B singer Tyrese Gibson recently made headlines for his false claims about the Asian Hate Crime Bill during an Instagram Live chat with civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who failed to correct him.
The interview with CNN’s Dana Bash gives Harris a chance to quell criticism that she has eschewed uncontrolled environments, while also giving her a fresh platform to define her campaign and test her political mettle ahead of an upcoming debate with former President Donald Trump set for Sept. 10. But it also carries risk as her team tries to build on momentum from the ticket shakeup following Joe Biden’s exit and last week’s Democratic National Convention.
The visit from VP Harris and Governor Tim Walz was one to remember. It was clear that the message that was conveyed to attendees, left many engaged supporters, ready to work and to continue with getting the message out to their friends, loved ones and community. Harris told attendees where she stands, what is important and what is required as a nation to uphold our democracy here in America.
