The 2024-2025 school year has officially begun in Broward County, with 251,000 students enrolled in 239 public schools and 87 charter schools. This year, the district has implemented two significant changes to enhance safety and minimize distractions: metal detectors in all public high schools and restrictions on cell phone use.
Metal Detectors to Enhance School Security
By the start of classes, metal detectors were installed in all public high schools in Broward County. Students will be scanned for weapons every morning, providing an additional layer of security. While there may be some initial delays as the system is fine-tuned, school principals and staff will work to ensure a smooth process.
Cell Phone Restrictions to Minimize Distractions
The School Board has approved restrictions on cell phone use for all grades. Students will be required to store their phones away and place them on airplane mode during school hours, unless permitted by their teacher. Headphones, including AirPods, are also banned. This move aims to reduce distractions and promote focused learning, while still allowing access to devices in emergency situations.
Additional Safety Measures
The district has introduced 60 new electric buses with surveillance cameras to ensure student safety during transportation. The Transportation Department has also provided tips for parents and students to ensure safe bus stops and pickups.
With these new measures in place, Broward County Public Schools, Florida’s second-largest school district, aims to provide a secure and focused learning environment.
