FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (Sept. 25, 2025) – Friends and family of the late Carlton B. Moore will honor the memory and the mission of the former Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner with an event that celebrates his commitment to the community.

The 6th Annual Carlton B. Moore Friends & Family Day will take place from 3 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Osswald Park, 2220 NW 21st Ave. in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Moore, who passed away on April 2, 2014, at the age of 60, served on the City Commission for more than 20 years and was a past president of the local branch of the NAACP.

Presented by the Carlton B. Moore Freedom Foundation (CBMFF) and sponsored by the City of Fort Lauderdale, the event is a heartfelt continuation of Moore’s work. It’s a day for the entire community to celebrate, with a lively program featuring the beats of DJ SCO of Hot 105, the comedic stylings of Fefe Frazier, food trucks, and a marketplace. The day’s schedule also includes live music presented by local sensation The Harden Project, with plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained, including a Kids Zone complete with waterslides and games.

For Forrest Moore, president of the CBMFF and one of the late commissioner’s two sons, the annual event is a deeply personal endeavor.

“We are honored to partner with the City of Fort Lauderdale to host this event in my father’s memory and to continue his commitment to the community, and we’re incredibly grateful to Commissioner Pamela Beasley-Pittman, whose support has been instrumental in making this partnership possible,” Moore said. “This event is a labor of love for our Foundation and it’s great that the city is joining us in sharing that love with the people of Fort Lauderdale.”

The event will include the presentation of the Carlton B. Moore Community Service Award, first introduced in 2022. This year’s honorees are two political icons: Broward County Commissioner Hazelle P. Rogers, who previously served in the Florida House of Representatives and as Mayor of Lauderdale Lakes, and the late Andrew DeGraffenreidt, an educator and public servant who was the first African American elected to the Fort Lauderdale City Commission.

“Mr. DeGraffenreidt was the ultimate trailblazer, who set the stage for Commissioner Rogers and for my father to follow in his footsteps,” Moore said. “It’s a privilege to present members of his family with this well-deserved recognition in memory of his work in our community. Commissioner Rogers continues to carry the torch of public service, and we are honored to recognize her efforts.”

Carlton Moore’s passion for service was inspired by his mother, Ada Bradley Moore, a longtime teacher and supervisor at Sunland Park (now Carter Park) in Fort Lauderdale. Ada Moore, who helped organize the inaugural Friends & Family Day in honor of her son, passed away shortly after the first event.

In addition to presenting the annual Friends and Family Day, the CBMFF advocates for the release of inmates affected by mandatory minimum sentencing and presents $2,000 scholarships to Broward County graduating seniors. Since its inception in 2014, the Foundation has awarded more than $58,000 in scholarships to high school graduates.

This year’s scholarship recipients include Willow Blackman, of Stranahan High School, who is attending Tuskegee University; Chloe Walker, of Dillard High School, who is attending Florida Gulf Coast University; Destiny McKenzie, of Dillard High School, who is attending Alabama State University; and Sean Newman, of Dillard High School, who is attending the University of Miami.

“We believe that education unlocks doors to opportunity,” Moore said. “It’s an honor to support these students, who have demonstrated their commitment to academics and service, as they pursue their goals and strive to make a positive impact on their communities.”
