Unless you agree that Israel should massacre Palestinians (and probably all other non-Europeans) in Israel, the center of the United States’ Democratic Party basically considers you out of kilter and your misalignment at odds with the power of the Party, and American foreign policy. You are then described as a radical, and further as a leftist, and your political position classified as socialist. Such branding will kill national party financial and people support if you happen to be a Democratic Party candidate for a national office.
With just a modicum of support, Angie Nixon, a six-year Black Florida State Representative from Jacksonville, who is tired of being tired, joined the Democratic Socialists of America and Working families Party this year, to run for the U. S. Senate as a Democrat and handily won the Primary election. That event sent shock waves through the national Democratic Party. Washington based center white democratic power reached out to its Black clones in churches, political clubs, and wherever else they harvest them, to send a message for folks to sit this one out.
But Sister Nixon, raised with her brother by a single mother who worked two jobs, got her degree in political science from the University of Florida in 2007, and hit the streets engaging in political action. Nixon understands that either Black people reform the Democratic Party as the party for the people, or we are at risk of losing what is left of the American Ideal. Angie Nixon rightly believes in universal health care, higher taxes on the wealthy and a minimum wage of $25 an hour. What I like about Sister Angie Nixon is her courage and determination! In spite of the center white Democratic Party loathing her, and willing to sacrifice a U. S. Senate seat to the Republican Party, which is absolutely stupid, the Sister’s response has been to put her campaign in passing gear. She will not be deterred. Will the so-called Black church remain aligned with center white America? We shall know next week.
This mother of two can teach a lot about community involvement and development. She co-founded an outdoor market called the Melanin Market which provided healthy food options, co-authored an award- winning children’s book with her daughter. In 2019 she and her daughter opened a smoothie/ice cream/sandwich shop, and in 2024 Angie Nixon founded a bookstore and coffee shop. Nixon is also Director for the Florida Public Service Union’s Higher Education Campaign. Since 2022, Nixon has served as executive director of Florida For All, a six member coalition that promotes voter rights.
