From South Florida to the National Stage: A Changemakers’ Journey

Sometimes opportunities come when you least expect them, and for me, Changemakers Y-USA became an experience I will never forget.

Representing South Florida’s Broward County, Odari Gervis and I, Jabari Bovell, along with our chaperone, Ms. Sharon Hughes, embarked on an incredible journey. Because there was no direct flight to North Carolina, our travels took us from South Florida to Baltimore, Maryland, before finally arriving in North Carolina for Changemakers Y-USA. Though the travel was long, it became part of an unforgettable adventure.

While in North Carolina, Odari and I presented our idea to secure funding for our podcast. Standing before judges and fellow changemakers was nerve-racking. I remember feeling extremely nervous, wondering if I would be able to deliver the presentation the way I had practiced. But despite those nerves, I pushed through. Out of 227 groups and participants from across the nation, we earned 10th place overall—a moment that made all the hard work, preparation, and anxiety worthwhile.

Although we did not receive the funding we hoped for, we left with something even greater: faith and determination. We know that setbacks are not the end of the story. As people of faith, we believe that God can work anything out. Sometimes His plans are bigger than our own, and what may seem like a disappointment today can become an opportunity tomorrow. We trust that our podcast will continue to grow and that doors will open in God’s perfect timing.

After the competition, we celebrated with a party, enjoying the friendships and memories we had made throughout the experience. The event brought together young leaders from around the country, all committed to making a positive impact in their communities.

One of the most memorable moments came from hearing Suzanne McCormick share a powerful message that has stayed with me ever since: “The future doesn’t start tomorrow—it starts today.” Those words reminded me that young people do not have to wait to make a difference. We can begin right now.

At the conclusion of Changemakers Y-USA, Odari and I proudly received certificates recognizing our participation and accomplishments. Holding those certificates was a reminder that success is not measured only by winning or receiving funding, but by having the courage to step up, share your vision, and represent your community with pride.

Looking back, I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Broward County alongside Odari Gervis and with the guidance of Ms. Sharon Hughes. From South Florida to Baltimore, North Carolina, and back home, our Changemakers journey was about more than competition—it was about growth, courage, and proving that even when you are nervous, determination can help you rise to the occasion.

Placing 10th out of 227 groups showed us that big dreams from Broward County can compete on a national stage. We may not have received the funding this time, but we know that God is still writing our story. As Suzanne McCormick said, “The future doesn’t start tomorrow—it starts today,” and with faith, hard work, and perseverance, the future is bright. And as we returned home with our certificates in hand, we carried with us memories, friendships, and lessons that will last a lifetime.
