Gibson Garners Key District 1 Endorsements

MIAMI LAKES,FL. –A  long time community activist, Antonio “Tony” Miyar, along with the Mayor of The Town of Miami Lakes, Michael Pizzi, Jr., have announced their endorsements of Miami Gardens Mayor Shirley Gibson for Miami Dade County Commission, District 1.

In a statement released Saturday, Mayor Pizzi expressed his concern that residents of the northern portions of the district are unaware that their district has been changed. “Where is our current representative? The northern Country Club and Moors residents don’t even know they are no longer represented by Esteban Bovo, Jr.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Jordan in almost a year, has made little or no attempts to engage our community—where is the Leadership?” asked Mayor Pizzi.

It’s a sentiment echoed by another long-time resident and community activist, Antonio “Tony” Miyar, who announced his support of Gibson earlier in the week. “She is a woman of integrity. Her spirit and soul are good, people can feel it – her actions show it. We need some-one of her caliber who will be about the business of all the people, not special interests. Above all this, Gibson is a person that listens to us all.”

The dual endorsements are key in light of their joint political power. Together, in 2011, Mayor Pizzi and Miyar led residents of then-District 13 in the recall of Commissioner Natacha Seijas, who according to Mayor Pizzi, was “a poster child for everything that is wrong with Miami-Dade County government—a government that is out of touch with taxpayers and has sold out to special interests.”

An overwhelming 88 percent of residents who voted in Hialeah and Miami Lakes agreed and ousted the longtime Commissioner along with former County Mayor Carlos Alvarez.

“People are sick and tired of being lied to, being ignored and taken for granted. They want their communities back and their opinions and positions considered – at the least,” said Gibson, adding, “How can you represent a community that doesn’t even know who you are? The people of District 1 deserve better – I want to be their voice of change.”
