HBCU Football Across the Spectrum

By Nunnie Robinson, Westside Gazette Sports Editor

We must begin at home for fear of being hung in effigy by the Rattler faithful. FAMU had the highest rated homecoming attendance wise, proving the loyalty, love and commitment of the myriad alumni from every corner of America. In defeating the Alcorn State University Braves, they won a conference game, pleasing the passionate Rattler following who had expressed palpable trepidation about the game’s outcome based on previous performances.

In the SWAC West, Prairie View and head coach Tremaine Jackson sit in first place with a 4-0 record after defeating Southern on its homecoming game. Apparently, selecting a HC opponent has become an art as Jaguars coach Terrence Graves was relieved of his duties on Monday, replaced on an interim basis by former Alcorn coach Fred McNair. Jackson State and Alabama State dominate the SWAC East Division.

The MEAC front runners remain North Carolina Central and South Carolina State with Delaware State a not too distant third.

The CIAA leader is Virginia Union while Benedict and Albany State top the SIAC.

Following are the Top 10 HBCU Legends teams including their division and overall record.

  1. Jackson State (5-1, 3-0 SWAC

2.North Carolina Central (5-2, 0-0 MEAC

  1. South Carolina State (4-2, 0-0

4.Alabama State (4-2, 1-1 SWAC)

5.Prairie View A&M (5-2, 4-0 SWAC)

6.Delaware State (4-3, 0-0 MEAC)

7.VA Union (6-1, 4-0 CIAA)

8.Texas Southern (4-3, 3-1 SWAC)

9.Benedict (5-0, 4-0 SIAC)

10.Albany State (6-1, 5-0 SIAC)

As homecomings continue in HBCU circles, I’m thrilled to the witness the love, enthusiasm and loyalty exemplified by alumni throughout America.

Of Note: There are 3 HBCU universities name Lincoln. Can you list the states they’re located in?
