Major League Baseball (MLB) celebrated Jackie Robinson Day on Tuesday, April 15, the day the Dodgers’ iconic player debuted and broke baseball’s color barrier in 1947.

MLB celebrates this anniversary by having all players, coaches, managers and umpires wear the number 42, Robinson’s jersey number, during games every year on April 15. The April 15 tradition has occurred annually since 2004.

Baseball teams hold events and tributes on that day throughout the country.

Educational information on Robinson’s life and legacy also are shared.
