I found myself cheering for Spain against Argentina in the World Cup, a 1-0 Spain victory and a diametrically different match from the bronze medal contest featuring England and France, an unusually high-scoring affair in which England overcame a proud, determined France, 6-4.
From a historical perspective, the Spanish conquistadors, progenitors of the slave trade in the 16th century, were most notable for conquering the advanced Native American empires of the Aztecs, Maya, and Inca. So why on earth would I root for Spain? The United Nations presented a resolution condemning slavery; however, three countries refused to sign: Israel, the United States, and Argentina. Prayerfully, you understand my logic. Trump and Netanyahu are in lockstep regarding the Palestinian genocide of the elderly, women, and children. Perhaps Argentina’s leadership is in agreement with them.
Although the initial clamor for our athletes to boycott SEC, ACC, and most Division I schools in Confederate states has gradually subsided, Nolan Wells’ suspicious drowning in Mississippi, Louisiana’s in-your-face gerrymandering, and the complete distrust of the DOJ under 47 simply reaffirm the positions taken by the NAACP, D.L. Hughley, and yours truly. Encouraging our superior athletes to choose schools not associated with the overt racism of the Old South must remain a weapon of choice in the arsenal of those who believe in democracy, equality, diversity, inclusion, and fairness for all, no matter your race, ethnicity, or political affiliation.
LeBron James, in his declining years, is still powerful enough to call his own shots, and the suitors are lined up to pay his asking price, believing that he is capable of leading them to a championship—namely Cleveland, Miami, Golden State, and Philadelphia. I personally think he returns home to Cleveland, which is presently a contender personnel-wise. Otherwise, he will choose the team that offers him the best opportunity to win another championship. So powerful and influential is LeBron that the league won’t release the schedule until he has publicly declared his intention.
The WNBA All-Star Game will be played Saturday, July 25, in Chicago and will feature stars Caitlin Clark, A’ja Wilson, Paige Bueckers, Angel Reese, Breanna Stewart, among others. Despite some negative press and officiating concerns, the league is rapidly approaching national popularity and stability.
Finally, the Marlins are on a six-game losing streak following the MLB All-Star Game, but that’s just the nature of baseball. I assure you they will bounce back and contend for a playoff spot.
Oh, by the way, the Strait of Hormuz is still closed, 18 American soldiers have died in this illegal war, and 47 has declared a 50% tariff on Canada! What say you…
