BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Southern University Jaguars are scheduled to play the Jackson State Tigers in the SWAC Football Championship on Saturday, Dec. 7.
Southern football head coach Terrence Graves and some players spoke with the media at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
“If you prepare to win and continue to play and focus on the little things, the fundamentals and the techniques, those things give you an opportunity to win week in and week out. So I’m not one that, you know, my confidence is high this week,” Graves said.
“Jackson State has definitely done a lot of the same things, defense-wise, that they did when they played us. And so I think it’s our job to, you know, make the adjustments. Look at what worked the first game and what didn’t work the first game, and what could be advantages and disadvantages, the pros and cons of their defense, and so we can be able to counter that with what we think can work best against them,” said Jalen Woods, the team’s quarterback.
Chandler Whitfield, a wide receiver, said Graves allows the team to be themselves.
“I can say like we just came together as a team. We just got closer as an offense, really wanted more for each other, just playing for that,” Whitfield said.
The Tigers are hosting the Jaguars, who are 8-4 overall with a record of 7-1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Tigers are 10-2 overall and undefeated in the SWAC. They defeated Southern in their first matchup this year, 33-15.
Southern is coming off a 24-14 victory over Grambling State in the Bayou Classic. They have won four games in a row coming into this matchup against Jackson State.
