FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — For the first time in Fort Lauderdale’s history, the iconic Stanley Cup will make an appearance on Sistrunk Boulevard. The championship trophy, which has been hoisted by some of the greatest hockey players in the world, will be on display at Smitty’s on September 18, 2024, from 7 p.m., to 9 p.m. The event offers fans a rare opportunity to see the Stanley Cup up close and capture photos with the historic trophy.
The Cup’s visit to Smitty’s, located at 1134 NW 6th Street, is a celebration of the Florida Panthers’ remarkable victory this past season. The occasion brings a wave of pride to the community, particularly on Sistrunk Boulevard, a street rich in history and cultural significance.
“This is an incredibly special moment,” said Broward County Commissioner Robert McKinzie. “Bringing the Stanley Cup to our neighborhood for the very first time is an honor. It’s a fantastic opportunity for local families and hockey fans to not only celebrate the Panthers’ success but to share in the joy of having such an important part of sports history right here in Fort Lauderdale.”
Chris Smith, a former Senator and owner of Smitty’s, couldn’t hide his excitement about hosting the event at his establishment. “We’re beyond thrilled to welcome the Stanley Cup to Smitty’s. Our restaurant has always been a gathering place for sports fans, and this is such a unique opportunity for the community to celebrate together. The Panthers’ victory is something that we’re all proud of, and we invite everyone to come out and take pictures with the Cup. It’s not every day that this happens!”
Founded by Chris and Desorae Smith in November 2020, Smitty’s Wings has become a central hub for sports fans and locals alike. The restaurant, a cornerstone of Sistrunk Boulevard’s revitalization, has been a key player in preserving the history and heritage of the Historic Dorsey River Bend Community. The street itself, named after Dr. James Franklin Sistrunk, Broward’s first Black physician and the founder of Provident Hospital, has long been a symbol of strength and unity in Fort Lauderdale.
