EGG ROLL DISASTER

By Samara Rawls

Over the past three years, I’ve fallen in love with Chili’s Southwestern Egg-rolls. They are a warm, chewy, and delicious appetizer . Since I cannot always go to Chili’s, I decided that I wanted to try to make the egg-rolls on my own, and let me tell you, it was a DISASTER!!

When I started making them, I decided that I didn’t want to add cheese into the mixture because I don’t like cheese, but that was a huge mistake. It was difficult to create this recipe, because rolling egg-rolls is really complicated. When my food came out of the oven, I was so excited because I worked carefully preparing the food. I let them cool, then I ate one. As soon as started to chew, I knew my taste buds would be upset.

My egg-rolls were very dry and had absolutely no flavor to them. The food was so bad, I had to spit it out on my plate! My brothers tried it and told me that the egg-rolls were the worst food in the world. My parents tried to persuade me that they weren’t too bad, but when they tried it themselves, and I could tell they didn’t enjoy it either.

After my fail with making this food, I didn’t really want to cook again, but then I remembered Joshua 1:9, which states, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” This reminded me to not be discouraged just because I messed up one recipe. The verse told me I should try again because the Lord will help me. So the next time I try, I will update you all on it, and hopefully, the headline will read, Egg-Roll Masterpiece!

Two weeks ago, I wrote an article on how I prepared for a student election. I was running for the Vice President of my school’s Junior National Society. Last week, my opponents and I received the results on how we placed in our election.

When we ran for offices, we all had to give speeches on why we desired to become an officer for the club. When it was time for us to give our speech, we had to go up to the podium and speak for about 2-5 minutes on why we wanted to become an officer in the club.

When it was my time to speak, I was timid at the start but throughout the speech, I became less worried and was able to articulate my thoughts.

After the other candidates had given their speeches, it was time to vote for the offices. I was thrilled because I felt I did a marvelous job with my speech.

About a day after the speeches were given, the teacher club sponsor told us what we got on the election.

When she told me I had become vice president, I felt grateful because I was anxious, thinking I was going to lose because not enough people voted for me.

When I first thought of running for a position, I was not going to do it because I was too scared. But after I ran, I felt good, stepping out of my comfort zone and tried something different.
