NATIONWIDE — Trump drew attention at Quantico Marine Corps Base when he told top military leaders there are “two N-words” that cannot be used. He also joked about firing generals, praised U.S. nuclear power, and boasted about peace efforts abroad.
Speaking to hundreds of officers on Tuesday, Trump began with a comment about nuclear submarines he had moved near Russia in August. He said he avoids discussing nuclear weapons, calling it a superstition.
“We can’t let people throw it around, that word,” he said, according to People. “I call it the N-word.”
“There are two N-words, and you can’t use either of them,” Trump added, smiling as the room stayed mostly silent.
Still, Trump boasted about the country’s arsenal. “Frankly, if it does get to use, we have more than anybody else,” he said. “We have better, we have newer, but it’s something you don’t ever want to have to think about.”
He also noted the silence in the room. Trump joked that the officers could applaud or leave, but warned that walking out would cost them “your rank and your future.” Nervous laughter followed.
Earlier that day, he told reporters he planned to meet with generals and admirals and would not hesitate to fire anyone he didn’t like “on the spot.”
Trump also turned the speech toward himself, mentioning his push for a Nobel Peace Prize. He pointed to his plan to resolve the Gaza conflict, claiming it could mark the eighth war he helped end in eight months.
“That’s pretty good. Nobody’s ever done that,” he said before adding he would never receive it despite his efforts. “They’ll give it to some guy that didn’t do a damn thing. They’ll give it to a guy that wrote a book about the mind of Donald Trump,” he said.
Trump ended by saying he didn’t want the honor personally but thought the United States deserved it. “We’ll see what happens, but it would be a big insult to our country. I will tell you that. I don’t want it. I want the country to get it.”
