What is it about a picture?

What is it about a picture?

“Then ye shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their pictures, and destroy all their molten images, and quite (completely) pluck down all their high places.” Numbers 33:52 (KJV)

By Bobby R. Henry, Sr.

When I look at these pictures of Donald Trump it speaks volumes to the term, “It just blows me away!”

Whoever said that a picture is worth a thousand words must have been horrified by what they saw as a reflection of what they had done. Then on the other hand a picture can suck you up through turbulent delight and ooze you out to perfect paradise.

Even though the innovative Chinese proverb/quotation has erroneously been interpreted, the true and honest rendition is: A Picture’s Meaning Can Express Ten Thousand Words.

Whatever the proverb, quote or saying -it still carries one of the highest conclusions to what transpired over a given time period. Aside from actual eyewitnesses, nothing can compare.

Looking through some old photographs I was pleasantly surprised to see how strong our family genes are. Our Henry nose is quite obviously a trait that we’re never going to part with any time soon.

Notwithstanding the happy times that are captured in pictures, there are faces of those that have long gone on to glory and some to other resting places that “make you wanna holler and throw up both your hands,” yet they’re right there creating images that words pale to in comparison.

Now I know there are family secrets that all families have and most of them are hidden and tucked away under lock-and-key; hopefully in a crypt knee-deep in the swamp somewhere on Skunk Island in the state of Never-to-return. Now that’s some high-powered intergalactic stuff there. Be that as it may, those old Polaroid or Box cameras didn’t lie.

Pictures are sinful too, or should I say, pictures will make you sinful. Yep, you sort of fix your mind to believe this image that you’ve conjured up and all of a sudden you’re caught up and swept away on a magic carpet ride to da, daaa….oh well, you know.

Without using the marvels of technology and the enhancement of Photoshop, pictures basically tell their own story. Granted, aside from those of crime scenes, most of the stories captured in a picture are genuinely pleasant and are meant to remind us of happier moments.

So what do we do when the opposite draws us into the picture or the picture reflects the “dark side” of family history?

Stop the madness, clean up the pictures, no more hoochie mamas or prison poses. If you look closely at some of those pictures, Uncle Andy wasn’t your uncle; he might have been your daddy.

“Whatcha gon do when dey come for you bad boy, bad boy?” Pray tell that the camera person was a good and decent person or when you pose for the picture you show your best side.

“Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.” 1 Corinthians 13:12(NIV)

“Dear Lord help me to look at others through the possibility of my Spirit, that which You left with us to give comfort; never mind what the soulful picture shows.

ALL OF GOD’S PICTURES ARE UNIQUE AND UBIQUITOUS.
