Recently, South Florida Women of Color community  leaders held their Third Annual Women of Color Empowerment Conference at the Riverside Hotel in  Fort Lauderdale.  The theme for the conference was “Building Relationships Uniting Leaders.”

The soldout conference offered presentations from top leaders in the fields of health care, law, corporate, government and technology. Organizations involved with planning the leadership conference included the Broward County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Alfreda Coward, president, The North Broward County Chapter of the Links, Inc., Earlene Striggles-Horne, president and the Zeta Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Joe Ann Fletcher, president.

Presenters attending the conference included Cheryl Pearson-McNeil, senior vice president of Public Affairs and Government Relations for Nielsen Ratings; Lita Rosario, Esq., entertainment power-broker and principal of WYZ Girl Entertainment Consulting, LLC in Washington, DC.; Dr. Brenda C. Snipes, Broward County Supervisor of Elections; Philanthropist Tracy Mourning; Rosalind Artis, Florida Memorial University interim president; Marshawn Evans, former Miss America Beauty Queen; Bertha Henry, Broward County Administrator and many more dynamic women leaders.

This years conference ended with an authors corner and book signing by several local authors.

“The conference is much more than a day of dynamic women getting together and having a meal, it is an opportunity for us to learn from one another in a supportive and positive environment.  I consider it a movement,” said Burnadette Norris-Weeks, conference chair.

The sponsoring organizations are planning to hold periodic empowerment sessions:  Nov. 11, 2013 (Veteran’s Day) seminar on running for public office at Avenue Executive in Fort Lauderdale and will also present an economic development and empowerment session and reception on Dec. 6, 2013, where entrepreneurs and business leaders are invited to attend.
