FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — Gary Roy Downing Sr., a pioneering entrepreneur, master craftsman, and beloved family patriarch whose artistry left its mark throughout South Florida, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2026. He was 82.
Born to the late Nancy Bloomfield Downing and William “Bill” Wilson, affectionately known as “Snookie,” Downing was raised in Trenton, New Jersey. It was there that he learned the values of hard work, craftsmanship and entrepreneurship that would guide him throughout his life.
Downing relocated to Florida in the early 1960s and settled in Fort Lauderdale in 1965. Soon afterward, he founded Quality Wallcoverings, Inc., building a reputation as a highly respected artisan whose work enhanced the homes and businesses of prominent clients throughout South Florida.
His distinguished clientele included former Florida Gov. Bob Graham and actor Leslie Nielsen. His craftsmanship also can be found at such notable landmarks as the historic Hampton House and Runway 84. His extraordinary talent earned him an invitation to work on the White House Rotunda.
In 1976, Downing made history when he became the first African American to receive a Craftsmanship Award from the Broward Builders Exchange. He was recognized for creating an exceptional vinyl mural at Chuck’s Steak House—a groundbreaking achievement that reflected both his artistic ability and his determination to excel in an industry where opportunities for Black craftsmen were often limited.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Downing was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, godfather and friend. He was known for his boundless energy, fierce determination, unforgettable personality and generous spirit.
He leaves behind his loving sisters, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, niece, nephew and godsons, along with a host of relatives and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Gary Downing’s hands created beauty, but his greatest masterpiece was the legacy of love, he leaves behind. His vibrant spirit remains written in the hearts of all who knew him.
As the family patriarch frequently reminded those around him: “Live to Learn and Learn to Live!”
A Celebration of Life will be held at noon on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at Alexander-Levitt Funerals & Cremations.
