To avoid making it a reality, Broward County Water and Wastewater Services offers tips to properly dispose of fats, rags, oil and grease (FROG) and think “No Frog. No Clog.” Disposing of the left-over cooking grease from rich foods can cause damage to both household drains and water resources. In addition to costly repairs, fats, cooking oil and grease poured down drains can build up in pipes causing sewage backups not only in the home, but also into streets with the potential of flowing into the storm drain system, which can adversely impact waterways, canals and ponds. While grease poured down kitchen sink drains is a problem year-round, the holiday season, especially between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, is an appropriate time to remind residents that there are safe practices for disposing of cooking grease. The following tips may help prevent a clogged drain from ruining your holidays: • Throw bulky waste materials in the trash. • Freeze small amounts of fats, oils and grease in a container with a tight-sealing lid and dispose of them in a trash receptacle. • Mix cooking oil with an absorbent material such as cat litter or coffee grounds, place in a tightly-sealed container and dispose of them in a trash receptacle. • Scrape and wipe excess grease from pans and dishes with a paper towel before washing. • Prewash dishes and pans with cold water before putting them in the dishwasher. • Use a strainer in your sink to catch scraps. • Cover drains with a fine screen or catch basket and empty into garbage can as needed. • Use environmentally safe cleaning products instead of harsh detergents or cleaners that can damage sewer lines. The practice of pouring grease down the garbage disposal and running hot water and grease-fighting detergent is not an advisable practice. Home garbage disposals do not remove grease from the plumbing system and hot water will cool down in pipes causing fats and grease to coagulate, which causes blockages to occur further down the pipeline. It is not recommended to dispose of large amounts of grease in trash as containers may leak, causing problems with garbage trucks and at solid waste facilities. Instead, large amounts of fats, oils and grease, such as that used in deep-frying a turkey, can be disposed of at any of the County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection sites each Friday and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.: • Pompano Beach – 2780 N.
