Bill Cobbs, a prominent Black American actor with roles in more than 150 films and television shows, died on Tuesday at the age of 90, his family said.

     As much as any message that stirred the crowd and brought them to tears that day was “I’ve Been Buked and I’ve Been Scorned,” a slave lamentation first recorded as a Negro spiritual in the early 20th Century. Sang that day by the reputed, “Queen of Gospel Music,” Mahalia Jackson, upon special request from Dr. King, she rendered the song slowly and prayerfully in her deep, rich contralto just before he spoke.

       Central City Productions recently announced the nominees in 36 categories for the 39th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards taping on Saturday, July 20th, returning to Las Vegas at the Orleans Arena. Hosted by Emmy Award-winning TV personality and comedian Loni Love, alongside Marconi Award-winning radio/TV personality and comedian Rickey Smiley, the evening will bring together gospel music’s brightest stars for a celebration billed as “The Greatest Night in Gospel Music.” The 39th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards will premiere on the Stellar Network on Saturday, August 3rd at 8PM and 10PM EST and in broadcast syndication from August 10, 2024 – September 8, 2024.

     Angela Bofill, an R&B singer known for her hits “Angel of the Night” and “I Try,” has died. A rep for the entertainer confirmed the news on June 14. She was 70.

     When the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival ended June 16th, the audience had spoken. It named the zany, dark comedy Bad Shabbos its Audience Award Narrative winner. And this movie can thank a breakout performance by the 53-year-old rapper Method Man (Wu-Tang Clan) for pulling it across the finish line.

Observing family, friends, and others throughout the world community endure hardship has taught me the meaning of perseverance, especially when faced with adversity. I learned about faith and how to manifest more favorable outcomes through faith and work. I often drew upon the adage, “What doesn’t kill me only makes me stronger.”
