Lavita’s small rural community in Clewiston, where she has lived and worked for years, heard about this opportunity and unbeknownst to her began to share gifts of love towards her trip. Many said “we just want to be a part of helping Lavita represent our collective values on the global stage. This was our chance to give back and help her share her vision with the world.”
A robust delegation of administrators joined Florida A&M University (FAMU) Interim President Timothy L. Beard, recruiters, and student ambassadors in St. Petersburg, Tampa, and Orlando, Florida, to engage with high school and transfer students during the highly anticipated Florida Blue Florida Classic weekend. The trip marked the culmination of the 2024 Presidential Recruitment Tour. Recruiters representing FAMU’s 14 schools and colleges introduced prospective students to the benefits of a FAMU degree as the community prepared to enjoy the pageantry of the Florida Classic game and events.

Eminent Domain, the pernicious bane of Black land owners, left its mark on Gotham city. The legal doctrine of “Eminent Domain” is derived from the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution: “nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.” That doctrine destroyed an entire Manhattan hamlet that was once owned by Blacks. In 1856, New York used its power of eminent domain to condemn the properties within the boundaries of the proposed Central park to evict the predominantly Black residents of Seneca Village.
