        Former President Donald Trump’s statement at last week’s presidential debate that Haitians were eating pets in Springfield, Ohio has created serious problems for the Haitian American community and sparked outrage from Haitian Americans living in Florida.

        Democratic leaders are telling their party’s biggest donors that keeping Montana’s Senate seat blue is a real challenge. However, they are planning to go on offense in Florida to retain their majority, Axios has learned.

       Suffrage is the legal term for the right to vote. It is synonymous with women, because for the most part White men had the right to vote. We are not taught in school that Black-women were demonstratively active in the movement. It was a tenuous effort, because of residual racism from the antebellum period. Many of the women did not integrate and had Black only suffrage clubs. Let’s meet some of our prominent nubian advocates.

       Pompano Beach Arts is honored to present a powerful solo exhibition by Anthony Torres entitled An Island in the Shape of a Prison. This introspective collection delves into the artist’s exploration of self, his Puerto Rican heritage, and the lasting impact sustained during his deployment as a soldier at Abu Ghraib Prison in Iraq.        Fifty years is a long time—long enough to build a legacy of service, create deep bonds of friendship, and foster a commitment to community that spans generations. As the Fort Lauderdale Chapter of The Links, Incorporated celebrates its golden anniversary, one can’t help but reflect on the journey that began in 1974 with a group of determined women. Among them was Mrs. E. Pearl Maloney, AKA Mama Peral, a charter member who played a vital role in bringing the organization to life in Fort Lauderdale.

       As the sun set over Fort Lauderdale, a sense of pride and nostalgia enveloped the community, marking a milestone that resonates deeply within its heart. The Fort Lauderdale Links, Inc. a beacon of service and empowerment, celebrated its 50th anniversary—a monumental occasion that not only honors the past but also illuminates a future laden with hope and progress. At the helm of this celebration is Bobby R. Henry, Sr., the publisher of the Westside Gazette, who took a momentous opportunity to recognize and commend two extraordinary women, Mrs. Pearl Maloney and Mrs. Rose Merritt.

Broward Education Foundation and Bridge 2 Life are proud to announce their selection by the U.S. Department of Education as one of only six Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) chosen nationwide to participate in the beta testing of the 2025–26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This pilot program, beginning October 1, 2024, offers selected organizations early access to the FAFSA, providing an opportunity to help refine and improve the application process before its full-scale launch in December.
