At a recent worship experience at Mt. Hermon AME, Fort Lauderdale, I was captivated by a young man with whom I was unfamiliar. What captured my attention was this young man’s aura, his physical presence and demeanor. As a former football coach, I find myself constantly profiling those that I perceive as being or having been an athlete in the past.

Elmore Nickleberry, one of the last living participants in the Memphis sanitation workers’ strike of 1968, a historic walkout that sought to win respect and equal rights for African American workers and that drew the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King to their side, died on Dec. 30 in Memphis. He was 92.

Leslie “Les” McCann, an exceptional jazz pianist, composer and vocalist who discovered a young Roberta Flack, and whose own works have been sampled by countless hip-hop artist, died last Friday (Dec. 29) at the age of 88.
Along with the church, the lawsuit — filed Dec. 29 — specifically names the search committee chair, Valerie S. Grant, accusing her of behaving inappropriately by asking Marshall Turman questions and pressing issues not broached with her male counterparts.
