     Bishop C.M. “Sweet Daddy” Bailey, of The United House of Prayer for All People of the Church on the Rock of the Apostolic Faith, died Aug. 11 in Philadelphia while he was conducting the national convocation of the church that has 137 congregations nationwide.

The Mount Hermon African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church of Fort Lauderdale has a rich and glorious history as a proud member of the oldest predominantly Black denomination in the United States. Founded in 1906, Mount Hermon is the oldest A.M.E. church and the second oldest Black church in the Fort Lauderdale area.

The rate of college-aged students leaving the Black church is slower than the general public, however, the decline remains significant. As Pew Research Center notes 49% of Black millennials and 46% of Black Gen-Zers reported that they “rarely” or “never” attend religious services.

     Saint Ruth Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1908 by the late Brother Charlie Chambers and a few other faithful souls in Modello, Florida, presently Dania Beach, Florida. The church was named in honor of Brother Charlie Chambers’ daughter, Ruth. Saint Ruth was the first Black church organized in the City of Dania. The first place of worship was in a small house on NW 4th Avenue in Modello, Florida. The first sanctuary was erected on NW 4th Avenue from lumber recovered from the Atlantic Ocean front, now known as Dania Beach.
