Mr. James “Jimmy” Anders – Retired educator, coach, and counselor. Some may remember him from Mays High School where he taught physical education and coached football and basketball from 1954 to 1967.

     On Wednesday, April 29, 2020, Charles Bernard Adderley, husband, father, brother and grandfather, passed away of cardiac arrest, at the age of 78, 10 years after a subdural hematoma and stroke.

Kenneth brought the newspaper into the age of digital technology and ushered in an era of a new relevance to the publication with the inclusion of national wire service stories, and the incorporation of color photography within the pages of The Carolina Times. Though he made these improvements, Edmonds was always mindful of a statement his mother once made, “I’m trying to work my way out of a job.” She made that comment in the hopes that someday the playing field for all Americans, economically as well as socially, could be leveled.

     In normal times, funeral homes are not the source of front-page news stories. They are the places we see advertised in the middle pages of our newspapers. They enter our thoughts only inour moments of deepest pain – at the loss of loved ones. It is at these moments that they occupy our foremost thoughts: when we seek their guidance and expertise in honoring and laying to rest departed loved ones. But these are not normal times. The Funeral Home has entered the realm of popular news.

     Michigan has been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 virus. A Flint, Mich. Bishop and pastor in the area both died after recently falling ill after contracting the coronavirus. Bishop Robert Smith Sr., 83, and Pastor Kevelin Jones Sr., 72, with the Bountiful Love Ministries Church of God in Flint, both had their lives cut short by COVID-19. Both died on March 26. 

     Bill Withers, whose smooth and soulful voice brought decades of positive messages of upliftment with his award-winning music, has died, according to a report from the Associated Press. He was 81. The cause of death was attributed to “heart complications,” the AP wrote.
