As WNBA free agency shakes up expectations for the 2023 season, unnamed fans have had their eye on is Brittney Griner. Following her 10-month wrongful detainment in Russia, there were a lot of questions about whether or not she would return to basketball. Now the eight-time all-star has answered those questions by reportedly re-signing with the Phoenix Mercury. ESPN is reporting that its sources have confirmed that the center has signed a one-year deal worth $165,100.

Our student athlete honoree Antione Jackson, a 6’1” 175 lb. defensive back from Dillard High School, is the first cousin of last week’s honoree DJ Wimbley. A superb athlete who combines speed, quickness, agility and strength, Antione has garnered attention from several major D-I universities including UM, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Florida State, Colorado, et.al.

Destiny has finally come for Kenneth Jerome Riley. Known as “Ken” for those close to him and “Rattler” for those who played with him in the NFL, he has finally made his way to Canton. At the NFL Honors on Feb. 9, Riley was announced as a member in the senior division of the 2023 Pro Football Hall of Fame class. It was a long time coming…four decades in the works.

If I had to describe this team in one word it would be “Perseverance”! If I told you their story, you wouldn’t believe it!! EVERYONE counted them out! What I loved the most about this team was the way they loved on each other. Prayed for each other when one was in need and trusted each other enough to know that NO MATTER WHAT, I got your back! The Sunday after our FHSAA region 4 Regional competition, the team had a group outing to Church. The sermon for that particular Sunday was “STILL IN THE GAME!!!! We took that and ran with it. It was all we needed to hear.
Our Student Athlete of the Week is Dwayne Wimbley, a 6’ 6” sophomore basketball sensation who plays for Westminster Academy. Dwayne has led the basketball team to a 16-7 record, placing them first in 3A District 14 and in contention for a state title. While maintaining a 3.5 grade point average, he has already garnered attention from Division I schools including The U, FSU, LSU, Sanford and UCF among others and is currently ranked the # 1 basketball player in Broward County for the 2025 class.
