Florida A&M men’s basketball coach Robert McCullum is looking to fill out his coaching staff, and a familiar face was on campus for an interview.
Gravelle Craig, who was Bethune-Cookman’s head coach until March, was on campus, a source in FAMU’s athletic department confirmed. Craig was at the helm of B-CU’s basketball team for seven years and he compiled a 74-123 overall record with a 46-51 record in conference play.
Craig’s contract was not renewed after the 2016-17 season.
Craig was also an assistant at B-CU from 2004 until 2011. The Wildcats finished first in the MEAC (21-13 overall, 13-3 MEAC) during the 2010-11 season.
McCullum last week said he wanted experienced assistant coaches for his staff.
“You have two approaches,” McCullum said to the 220 Quarterback Club. “One, you can start with a really young staff. A staff you really can groom and feel good and think in the year to come, they’re going to be outstanding coaches. That’s one approach.
“The other approach is to go with veteran guys. I’m not sure as of yet, but chances are, we’re going to try to swing for the fences, trying to go with the best experience we can have. At the end of the day, recruiting and the ability to coach on the floor, that trumps everything.
