India’s Biological E’s Covid-19 Vaccine Expected By October

NEW DELHI — Indian state Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company, Biological E, is expected to launch its vaccine against coronavirus in October this year, said V. K. Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog, Indian government’s think tank.

“Phase 3 of Biological E’s trial is underway,” Paul said.

“Stockpile is being produced. We should wait for the results. We hope it will be in the next month or two. They’ve made a broad commitment that they’ll supply a significant amount by year-end.”

In June, the Union Health Ministry had announced that the Biological E would supply 30 crore doses of Corbevax to India by December.

The Drug Controller General of India on Sept. 1 granted permission to Hyderabad-based Biological E Limited to conduct Phase 2 & 3 clinical trials for its anti-Covid-19 shots called Corbevax on children between 5 and 18 years of age with certain conditions.

Further, the Drug Controller General of India said that the trial will be conducted across 10 sites in the county.

“The permission has been given to Biological E after the recommendation from the Subject Expert Committee,” the Drug Controller General of India said.

It is to be noted that the government has made an advance payment of INR 1,500 crores ($205.2 million) to Biological E for 30 crores [300 million] vaccines.

However, Zydus Cadila’s needle-free Covid-19 vaccine ZyCoV-D has already received emergency use authorization to inoculate children in the age group of 12-18. It is expected to be administered from the first week of October.

Trials of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin Covid-19 vaccine for phases two and three for children are underway, and its result is expected in September.

Earlier, in July, the drug regulator had also granted permission to the Serum Institute of India for conducting phase 2/3 trials of Covovax on children of age 2-17 years with certain conditions.

The trial will be conducted in ten locations.

The permission has been given to Biological E after the recommendation from the Subject Expert Committee.

“More than 36.7 crore doses administered in first 74 days of the World’s Largest Free-For-All Vaccination Drive launched on June 21, 2021. (As of September 3, 2021),” tweeted the India Fights Corona handle of the Indian government.

“45,352 new cases in the last 24 hours while the active cases account for 1.22 percent of total cases,” the Indian government said.

“India’s Active caseload stands at 3,99,778, and the recovery rate is currently at 97.45 percent. 34,791 recoveries in the last 24 hours, which increases the total recoveries to 3,20,63,616. The weekly positivity rate (2.66 percent) is less than 3 percent for the last 70 days, and the daily positivity rate is reported to be 2.72 percent. Over 520 million total tests conducted so far.”
