I wanted to share with you the launching of our latest collaboration Letters From Zora: In Her Own Words. I have partnered with colleagues from USC and Vanessa Bell Calloway (Zora) to present this one-woman play about the life of Zora Neale Hurston. We premiered this work on March 3, 2012 at the University of Southern California as part of the Arts Initiative called Visions and Voices. The grant we received allowed us to mount and present this work before 1300 people in Bovard Auditorium. Debbie Allen, Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett were among the many VIPs in attendance.
Gabrielle Pina (Author of Bliss and Chasing Sophea-Random House) is the brilliant playwrite who crafted the script for Letters From Zora. Anita Dashiell-Sparks (USC Professor of Theater) served as director and I composed the original soundtrack for the play. Vanessa Bell Calloway literally channeled Zora Neale Hurston. For those who are familiar with Hurston’s work, you know she was truly ahead of her time. She had many ideas that were contrary to the norms of the period in which she lived. Nonetheless, she thrived despite the many curve balls life thrown at her. She lived and died on her own terms.
We have recently secured management who will be shopping our play around the country to present at some of the major theater venues nationwide. I wanted you to be among the first to see our Electronic Press-Kit (EPK). Please share this with your friends and please look out for Letters From Zora: In Her Own Words.
