There is news for those who support Nelson Mandela. The celebrated leader is reportedly on his way home after spending a substantial amount of time in the hospital. His care is still intensive, but the 95-year old has been discharged, which is a miracle in itself.
According to a statement released by the South African government, Mandela’s condition remains critical and unstable at times. He has been hospitalized since June for a lung infection.
It appears that a hospital medical unit has been created at Mandela’s house, where his care will be around the clock.
“His team of doctors are convinced that he will receive the same level of intensive care at his Houghton home that he received in Pretoria [hospital],” the presidency statement says.
Mandela may go back to the hospital if his condition worsens over time. According to Andrew Harding of the BBC, Mandela’s discharge was not done because he is better. It was actually a mere transfer or a patient to a special intensive care unit in his home. His family asked that the transfer be made.
According to the office of South African president Jacob Zuma, Mandela’s condition “vacillated between serious to critical and at times unstable” and that “despite the difficulties imposed by his various illnesses, he, as always, displays immense grace and fortitude.”
They continued in their statement to talk about “Madiba,” which is Mandela’s clan name.
“Madiba has been treated by a large medical team from the military, academia, private sector and other public health spheres. We thank all the health professionals at the hospital for their dedication.”
Zuma told South Africans to accept the fact that Mandela was old and tired, and that the most they can do is pray. Mandela, who won the Nobel Peace Prize after being in prison for 27 years, is considered by many to be the greatest living leader on earth.
