Democrats, republicans and independents agree on one thing: Now is not the time to raise taxes. Very soon, voters will decide whether to approve a request by the Broward County School Board to increase ad valorem taxes on all residents. With inflation at a 40-year high, food prices extremely high, gas costing families an additional $200 per month on average and rent costs forcing more families into poverty, I led the charge on the county commission urging my colleagues to vote NO against this additional tax increase on Broward families. Ironically, before sending this to the county commission, the School Board Members didn’t even discuss this item on a regular agenda; it was on the consent agenda with no public input. Subsequently, this proposal was placed on the county commission agenda, then I spoke out loudly and publicly against this action and more than 83% of you responded to my commission survey urging a NO vote against this tax increase.
Looking ahead: Democrats, independents, and Republicans can agree on one thing: Now is not the time to raise taxes! Broward County voters should follow the lead of Broward County Commissioner Torey Alston and “just say no” to the Broward School Board’s proposed tax increase. He correctly called it an “additional tax on Broward families.” Stating that “we still see schools along the I-95 corridor left behind … and a facilities program still in shambles,” he added that there is “no fiscal trust in Broward County Public Schools.” Alston is right! Throwing good money after bad is not the way — accountability and transparency are!
The Republican Party (GOP), without any regards for democracy, humanity, or social justice, have embraced ungodly hypocrisies that threaten to divide this Nation against itself. Their ungodly hypocrisies of freedom of choice and love of country have forged a divide within our Nation festering like sore oozing yellowish or greenish vile pus. Former President Lincoln famously said, “A nation divided against itself cannot stand – but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other.”
The mid-term election in 2022 will be extremely important to Black people, and people of color in America. Voting is our voice, and voting is power. But in 2022 voting has become a popularity contest, and there appears to be fewer forums about platforms and issues.
