      Scott Israel, the former Broward County sheriff and current Opa-locka Police Chief, has announced his resignation, effective July 1, 2023. Israel, who served as the sheriff during the tragic 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, has been at the helm of the Opa-locka police department for a year.

   Clinical trials have also become another intersection for race and medicine, with people of color woefully underrepresented in important research to improve health outcomes for patients with particular diseases or medical maladies. These studies primarily enroll white, male patients, who makeup the vast majority of participants in clinical trials.

     The Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) launched the rebranded Be Fierce.Take Control.™ campaign during Lupus Awareness Month with rebranded imagery to connect with young Black and brown women at greater risk of developing lupus in their lifetime. The campaign empowers women to take control of their health, highlights common lupus symptoms and encourages those that may be experiencing symptoms to talk to their healthcare providers.
