Vaccine Update: Johnson and Johnson Resumes Vaccine Campaign

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have recommended that use of Johnson and Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine resume effective April 23. Johnson and Johnson’s vaccine campaign were paused after six women developed a rare blood clot soon after receiving the vaccine. The women were between 18-48; symptoms occurred between 6 and 13 days after vaccination.

For individuals that have received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, the CDC recommends that they seek medical care urgently if they develop any of the following symptoms:

    *Severe headache

    *Backache

    *New neurologic symptoms

    *Severe abdominal pain

    *Shortness of breath

    *Leg swelling

*Tiny red spots on the skin (petechiae)

    *New or easy bruising

For people that have received Johnson and Johnson’s vaccine within the last month, the following are possible signs of a blood clot:

    *Blurred vision

    *Fainting

    *Seizures

Please seek medical help immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

The risk of infection with coronavirus and the possibility of developing COVID-19 disease remain extremely high. Remaining vigilant against disease transmission is critical. Practice good COVID-19 control strategies:

*Observe social distancing guidelines (6 feet or more of separation from others).

*Practice good hand hygiene (wash hands frequently with soap and warm water or use hand sanitizers).

*Wear a mask when out in public.

*Avoid crowded indoor locations where possible.
