Even as the United States easily outpaces the rest of the world in coronavirus-related deaths, that toll has undoubtedly been undercounted, says Dr. Anthony Fauci.
As of Monday, the U.S. has reported nearly 582,000 related deaths throughout the pandemic, according to Johns Hopkins University data. But a University of Washington study released late last week estimated the count may be more than 900,000, Agence France-Presse reported.
Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and President Biden’s chief medical adviser, said even if that estimate is high, the total is more than what has been reported.
“That’s a bit more than I would have thought the undercounting was,” Fauci said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” of the study’s tally, AFP reported. “But I think there’s no doubt … that we are and have been undercounting.”
The United States has nearly 160,000 more than Brazil, the country with the second-highest number of deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins data. The U.S. also has roughly 20% of the world’s 158 million reported coronavirus cases with 32.8 million.
