TOKYO — Avani Lekhara, the gold medalist from the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics, has left people spellbound with her singing prowess apart from her shooting skills.

Sports Authority of India Media’s official handle tweeted a video in which the 19-year-old can be heard rendering from the famed Rahul Dev Burman song “O Mere Dil Ke Chain.”

“The Golden girl @AvaniLekhara is a perfectionist,” tweeted Sports Authority of India Media.

“She aims to excel at everything she sets her mind on Academics, Shooting and now this. Wondering what else she is perfect at? Take a look.”

Earlier, Lekhara fell short of words when asked to describe the feeling of winning a Gold medal in women’s R2— 10 meters Air Rifle standing SH1 event at the Paralympic Games on Aug. 30.

She became the first Indian woman in history to win a Paralympic Gold medal on Aug. 30. The 19-year-old athlete said she felt like she was on top of the world.

“Incredible! Avani Lekhara has won India’s first #Paralympics medal in #ShootingParaSport, and it’s #gold,” tweeted the official account of the Indian contingent for Tokyo 2020.

“I’m feeling so happy, so grateful, so elated for everything. When I won gold I was so happy that I couldn’t believe it, I felt like I am on top of the world. I was so happy,” Lekhara said.

She finished with a Paralympic Record, and in-process equaled the World Record with 249.6 points. However, the road to the finals was not as easy. Lekhara started poorly in qualification and then staged a comeback.

The Indian shooter started the final at an excellent pace as she scored consistently above 10 points. Two of her shots went below 10 in the first competition stage, which landed her in the second position. Lekhara grabbed the first spot and maintained a very healthy lead against her opponents going into the elimination stage.

“Stellar performance! Many congratulations to Avani Lekhara on winning #Gold at #Paralympics,” tweeted Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, former Indian shooter who had won a silver medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

“I was just focusing on my game, taking one shot at a time. I just wanted to give my hundred percent; that is it, was not thinking about the medal,” said Lekhara.

“I believe everyone can do whatever they want; you just have to have faith in yourself. Just give your 100 percent, and you can do anything you want.”

Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, also congratulated her on Aug. 30.

“Phenomenal performance @AvaniLekhara! Congratulations on winning a hard-earned and well-deserved Gold, made possible due to your industrious nature and passion for shooting,” said Modi in a tweet.

“This is truly a special moment for Indian sports. Best wishes for your future endeavors.”
