The statue, found in the middle of New York’s Times Square, was created by artist Thomas J. Price as part of a series called “Grounded in the Stars,” which organizers said confronts preconceived notions about identity and representation. Price’s piece depicts a Black woman with braids wearing plain clothes and resting her hands on her hips.

Times Square Arts Director Jean Cooney said the statue “is making a statement, potentially asking questions, about what we value as a city, as a society, and hopefully it’s a tribute to our shared humanity.” According to Price’s website, the artist created the piece to “disrupt traditional ideas” about what a “triumphant figure” looks like.

The statue sent MAGA social media users into a fury.

In an X post, Author and former investment banker John LeFevre shared a photoshopped image of the statue with Attorney General Letitia James’ head.

“My favorite thing about Letitia James is that she says ‘statue of limitations’ instead of ‘statute,’” LeFevre wrote alongside the edited picture.

Other photoshopped versions of the statue circulating online show the Black woman depicted as a gorilla and wearing a prison jumpsuit.

MAGA social media users also compared the statue to Lizzo and called the artwork “Tyquisha.”

“And it will be taken down once she goes to prison,” another comment reads.

“That statue wants to know what gratuity means.”

“You cannot convince me that’s not Fat Albert.”
