HBCU FOOTBALL WEEK 6: THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE, BUT THE FILM TELLS THE STORY

By Dr. Mark H. James, Ed.D. | Former College Head Football Coach

Week 6 of HBCU football reminded us why games are played on the field and not on paper. Undefeated teams fell, underdogs made statements, and several programs reminded the nation that tradition alone does not win football games.

As a former college head coach, I understand that predicting games requires more than examining records. You must evaluate personnel, injuries, coaching, preparation, strength of schedule, and how teams respond when adversity arrives.

My Week 6 predictions finished 15–6, a 71.4 percent accuracy rate, with one game postponed. All four of my strongest selections—Norfolk State, Delaware State, Alcorn State, and Albany State—delivered victories.

But the biggest stories came from the games that challenged expectations.

Grambling State made the statement of the week, defeating previously unbeaten Jackson State 45–38. The victory demonstrated why Grambling deserves renewed national recognition. Jackson State remains an outstanding program, but its defensive performance and ability to respond to adversity will face greater scrutiny.

South Carolina State suffered a surprising 49–39 defeat to Charleston Southern. While the Bulldogs remain among the nation’s strongest HBCU programs, surrendering 49 points raises legitimate defensive concerns. Championship football demands more than offensive production.

Alabama A&M delivered perhaps the most impressive response of the weekend, dismantling Bethune-Cookman 55–17. Following a narrow loss to Jackson State, the Bulldogs demonstrated resilience and preparation. That performance elevates Alabama A&M into my national Top 4.

Meanwhile, Morgan State survived Robert Morris 28–27, strengthening its argument for the nation’s No. 1 HBCU ranking. Close victories reveal character, but the Bears must eventually learn to control games rather than consistently survive them.

Division II football also demanded attention. Virginia State defeated Livingstone 59–7, while Johnson C. Smith overwhelmed Shaw 49–6. Virginia Union and Edward Waters remain legitimate national contenders. These programs deserve recognition based on performance, not diminished consideration because of their NCAA classification.

My conference prediction records tell their own story: SWAC 3–3, MEAC 4–2, CIAA 3–1, and SIAC 5–0. Fifteen correct picks against six losses represent a successful week, but accountability requires examining the misses just as carefully as the victories.

As we approach Week 7, the national rankings will shift. Morgan State has earned consideration for No. 1, Jackson State must regroup, South Carolina State must address its defense, and Alabama A&M is gaining momentum. Grambling has forced its way into the national conversation.

The lesson from Week 6 is simple: Reputation cannot replace preparation, and yesterday’s success does not guarantee tomorrow’s victory.

HBCU football represents something greater than touchdowns and championships. It represents institutions, communities, opportunities, and generations of excellence.

The scoreboard tells us who won. The film tells us why.

    Different Schools. Same Greatness.
