Scholarships drive success for Florida Memorial University students

    By Adriene B. Wright

MIAMI, FL – For many FMU students, scholarships are the lifeline to achieving a college education. Several of its students are recent recipients of scholarship awards for academic excellence in their chosen disciplines.

One such student, Miss Sherelle Stephens, a senior Communications major from Hampton, Va. ,has been named the Public Relations Student Society of America’s (PRSSA) Gold Key recipient and winner of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Miami Ev Clay Scholarship. Ms. Stephens will be recognized as a scholar-ship recipient during the Miami’s Annual Scholarship Luncheon at the Treetop Ballroom, Jungle Island, Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, along with five other recipients from local student chapters. This recognition is given to promising public relations students who have earned scholarships as a result of their exceptional leadership and academic accomplishments. Ms. Stephens will receive the Gold Key during the PRSSA’s Annual National Conference being held in Philadelphia, Oct. 25-29, 2013. Dr. Mary-Angie Salva-Ramirez stated that, “We are extremely proud that one of Florida Memorial University’s many talented students is being recognized for exceptional leadership and outstanding accomplishments.

Additionally, two Florida Memorial University Aviation students have been awarded scholarships totaling $5,000 each by the Greater Miami Aviation Association (GMAA). The recipients are Mr. Elvis Richardson, Jr. and Mr. Jihad Muhammad. The GMAA awards scholarships annually to qualified South Florida college students majoring in aviation and aviation-related programs who are pursuing careers in the South Florida Aviation industry. The awards are based on academic and aviation achievement, leadership, and financial need. The Department of Aviation and Safety is one of FMU’s flagship academic programs, offering degrees across three disciplines: Airway Science Management, Flight Education, and Air Traffic Control.

Where some 90 percent of its students receive some kind of financial assistance and over 65 percent are first-generation college students, scholarships are essential to helping students complete their academic pursuits at Florida Memorial University. Interim President, Roslyn Clark Artis stated, “These are only a few of many examples of the talent that exist among the FMU student population. We are here to provide the academic tools and resources to help all of our students succeed.”
