YMCA, FPL and community volunteers give back to Lauderhill community

On the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, more than 120 YMCA, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and community volunteers came together to create a Community Garden at Lauderhill six-12 School and Lauderhill Community Y.
“As we look to 2014 and the
challenges our communities face, it is important to start thinking about how community service not only benefits the individual who’s giving back, but the community as a whole,” said YMCA of Broward County CEO & President; Sheryl A. Woods.
The garden will serve as a way to bring the community together and offer healthy eating choices to the people in the com-munity. Volunteers worked to make the fruit forest part of the garden, planting edible foods like sweet potatoes, and trees for bananas, papayas, and other fruits. And seniors planted seedlings for peas, pomegranate, corn, tomatoes, cucumbers and squash.
Thanks to the support of FPL, the project is one of 10 MLK Day of Service projects YMCAs throughout Broward County welcomed over 500 volunteers in various community service projects honoring Dr. King’s community spirit.
