Miami cornerback Thomas Finnie was suspended indefinitely Tuesday after being arrested and charged with occupied burglary and grand theft in connection with an on-campus computer theft earlier this month. The university confirmed the arrest and suspension in a press release, and said Finnie had been transported to Dade County Jail.
According to the school newspaper, the Miami Hurricane, a laptop was reported stolen from a dorm room on Dec. 4, leading to the arrest of another suspect, Del’Neco Streeter.
Streeter attempted to sell the laptop back to the owner, in person, for $1,000, according to the Coral Gables Police Department. The ownerof the laptop, a student, had managed to communicate with the alleged thieves by “plac[ing] an electronic message on the screen of his laptop” offering money for its return. Streeter arrived for the exchange in a car driven by a second man, who fled police and ditched the car. After his arrest, Streeter reportedly told police a friend had stolen the computer, and he was charged with dealing with stolen property and resisting arrest.
Finnie was reportedly questioned two days after the alleged theft, but not arrested. He turned himself into university police on Tuesday. Records showed he was also arrested in July for possession of marijuana, which was not widely reported at the time.
Finnie, a Miami native who starred in football and track at nearby Central High, started six games this season as a sophomore and played in all 12 games, finishing with 30 tackles, three passes broken up and an interception in the Hurricanes’ win over NC State. As a true freshman in 2011, he played in all but one game, recording 14 tackles off the bench. No conditions have been specified for his reinstatement, though he was still listed on Miami’s official roster as of Tuesday afternoon.
