    Broward County Spotshot

     By Marsha Mullings, MPH

There are 1,007 cases of Coronavirus infection in the State of Florida, as of 6 p.m., March 22, 2020. There are 13 deaths due to Coronavirus infection in Florida.

    In Broward County:

    • There are 217 cases of Coronavirus infection
    • There are 3 deaths due to Coronavirus
    • 37 cases are currently under hospitalization
    • 75 of the county’s cases are travel-related
    • 84 are not related to travel
    • 58 are of unknown exposure

The Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, has issued an executive order calling for strict closure of all beaches, restaurants, bars, movie theatres and concert venues, among others in Broward County, through March 31. The order may be extended as needed. This order was issued to put in place the practice of social distancing, to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus. Social distancing entails standing at least 6 feet away from other individuals, whenever possible. It also entails avoiding hugs and handshakes, avoiding crowds and large gatherings and avoiding enclosed areas within many people.

Other measures to reduce the spread of the virus includes:

Handwashing – washing hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. In the absence of soap and warm water, a hand sanitizer with 60% alcohol may be used.

Avoiding touching of the eyes, mouth and nose, especially after touching surfaces such as handrails.

Covering sneezes and coughs to prevent the spread of droplets to others.

Cleaning high-use surfaces such as counter tops, doorknobs, phones, handles and other surfaces, as often as possible.
