    Coronavirus Report: September 28, 2020 September 28, 2020

    By Marsha Mullings, MPH

    USA

    7.1 million cases, 204,762 deaths

    Florida

    700,564 cases, 43,533 total hospitalizations, 14,032 deaths

    Broward

    76,202 cases, 5,793 total hospitalizations, 1,379 deaths

    • There were 16,810 new coronavirus cases in Florida last week.
    • There was an average of 2,400 daily new cases over the last week.

    Current Trends

    • The number of daily new cases of COVID-19 infections in Florida has held steady over the last week.
    • More than 5.2 million people have been tested.
    • Overall positivity rate is 13.3%
    • The rate of new COVID-19 infection is soaring among college students and young adults 15-24. Colleges and universities in South Florida are particularly affected by spikes in new cases.

Broward County is moving into Phase 3 of its reopening plan. Bars and restaurants will be opened for full capacity dining and entertainment. With fully reopened restaurants and bars, it is especially important to maintain strict disease control measures. Crowding in bars and restaurants is a risk factor of coronavirus transmission. Take the following precaution:

    • Avoid closed spaces with poor ventilation
    • Avoid crowded places with many people nearby
    • Avoid close-contact settings – such as close-range conversations
    • Wear a mask when out in public.
